To respond to the challenges of the ecological transition, the European Union has progressively increased its commitment to promoting the Circular Economy.
For this reason, in March 2020, the European Commission adopted a new Circular Economy Action Plan with targets that involve both types of waste management, including recycling of urban waste and landfill usage, as well as individual materials. Specifically, the new Circular Economy Action Plan sets for 2035 the goal of 65% of urban waste recycled and 75% of recycled packaging waste newly recycled, with different goals for individual types of materials.
In addition, the Plan sets the goal of less than 10% of waste sent to landfills, with the prohibition of sending waste that can be differentiated. In terms of achieving this last goal, Italy is still quite distant: 20.9% in 2019.
