Zero Carbon Archive
Documents from the past editions of the Zero Carbon Community, a project focused on the decarbonisation process, to discuss and exchange best practices among companies.
Learn more about the CommunitySecond edition (2024)
With the second edition, the Hydrogen Community evolved into the Zero Carbon Community: the focus of our work has expanded, monitoring additional application contexts and different technological solutions that can contribute to the decarbonisation process by following a principle of technology neutrality, in which the different available solutions are exploited synergistically in the different application areas and time scales.
Results of the 2023 edition and goals of the 2024 edition
On March 26, 2024, the results of the first edition of the Community were presented in Povo (Trento). It was also an opportunity to reaffirm TEHA's vision on energy transition, which combines decarbonisation, industrial competitiveness and new growth opportunities.
Sustainable and competitive energy to support the data economy in Italy
On April 11, 2024, TEHA Group brought together at STACK's headquarters in Siziano (Pavia) data centre developers, energy and grid operators, and developers of renewable plants and sustainable technologies, to discuss the impacts of the development of a data centre infrastructure in Italy, which is a strategic technological enabler for the digitalisation of the country but implies an increase in the nominal active energy power on the territory. The integration of the most innovative decarbonisation technologies can be a technically complex exercise and requires a careful analysis of the implications in technical, economic and regulatory terms.
The future of the chemical and refining sectors: needs and opportunities for decarbonisation
Syracuse (Sicily), May 16 2024
In a meeting with national and regional MPs, mayors of the industrial area and provincial trade unions, Confindustria Syracuse (representing seven large companies based at the Syracuse Industrial Cluster) and TEHA Group presented the outline of a Study aimed at defining a new vision for the decarbonisation and competitiveness of the Cluster. The unified vision of a "Zero Carbon Industrial Cluster" in the Syracuse Industrial Cluster enables preserving its competitiveness, attracting investments from companies interested in producing in decarbonised contexts, supporting the reconversion of Sicilian companies towards new sectors of the green economy, and contributing to the sustainability of the region.
The development potential of hydrogen for sustainable energy and decarbonisation
Trieste (Friuli Venezia Giulia), June 14, 2024
This Working Table was held with the aim of stimulating a structured debate on the development potential of an integrated supply and demand ecosystem around the Hydrogen Valley, with a particular focus on the opportunities related to the North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley. Companies operating in the area participated, with an institutional speech by Alessia Rosolen, Regional Councillor for Labour, Training, Education, Research, University and Family of the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Guiding principles for the development of a biogas and biomethane supply chain: an alternative development vision for Italy that supports the competitiveness of the agricultural and industrial supply chains
Rome, September 20 2024
The meeting was an opportunity to launch a Community vertical dedicated to biogas and biomethane, aimed at stimulating a proactive dialogue between the various actors involved in various capacities in the development of a supply chain in Italy.
Actively involving the agricultural sector in the development of the supply chain makes it possible to create new opportunities for sustainable growth and, at the same time, safeguard biogas and biomethane production in Italy, minimising negative externalities through clean and efficient technologies. Indeed, these are among the key decarbonisation levers to preserve the competitiveness of the country's hard-to-abate sectors, which are engaged in a major energy transition process.
"In the scenario, there is a clear need to match opportunities to create a more sustainable environment among stakeholders, maximising benefits for both producers and consumers. The priority is the efficiency and commitment of the entire supply chain," commented Danilo Serioli, Country Lead Italy of Bloom Energy. "This is the result of the event so well organised by the Zero Carbon Community, of which Bloom Energy is proud to be a part. Bloom Energy is pleased to contribute with its first-in-class fuel cell technology to the goal of decarbonising the Italian energy sector, in which biogas and biomethane are key players".
The role of agricultural supply chains in the energy transition
Bari (Apulia), November 8, 2024
The Working Table stimulated a structured debate on the importance of promoting synergies among the agricultural, industrial and energy sectors to explore new opportunities for competitive growth and stimulate a dialogue across the supply chain. The agri-food sector plays a significant role in the Italian social and economic fabric (with an added value of more than 64 billion euro); energy, decarbonisation and biodiversity are its main challenges but also factors that can increase its competitiveness.
In particular, agricultural supply chains can play a key role in the production of energy sources, renewable vectors, CO2 credits, and in the protection of biodiversity, contributing, in synergy with all players in the agri-food chain, towards a sustainable development. However, these actions must first and foremost satisfy the interests of farmers and agro-industrial production: a win-win approach must be seeked to leverage these developments in order to strengthen the competitiveness and investment capacity of the sector.
First edition (2023)
The first edition (Hydrogen Community) was focused on the role of hydrogen in the decarbonisation process and key actions to foster the implementation of initiatives and the deployment of the dedicated supply chain.
Strategy and governance on hydrogen: comparing countries
The first meeting of the Community (April 18, 2023) was attended by representatives of various international institutions (Germany, KSA, Netherlands, Sweden, UK) that work with hydrogen. The aim of the meeting was to define key elements for a national hydrogen strategy by comparing international best practices.
Territorial development and "hydrogen ecosystems"
On June 22, 2023, a Forum was held in Rovereto with the aim of promoting a dialogue with the companies involved in the Hydrogen Valley, and defining action proposals to maximize impacts on the territory. The event was attended by over 130 representatives from more than 70 institutions, companies, research centers and universities.
The Forum was held in Catania on November 13, 2023, with the participation of the Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Hon. Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. The event focused on identifying investment opportunities related to hydrogen and bioenergy, examining the economic and social impacts on the Sicilian economy. This was an important opportunity to discuss the development prospects related to energy transition and renewable energy, with particular attention to the possible advantages for Sicily, Italy and Europe.
"Low-carbon hydrogen is crucial to support market development and bring transport, storage and consumption systems to an early stage, where green hydrogen is a less competitive alternative." Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister for the Environment and Energy Security
Public transport and synergies with the Hydrogen Valleys
The last 2023 meeting of the Community was dedicated to public stakeholders and companies involved in the Hydrogen Valleys. The main objective was to define the role of public transport in supporting the development of these initiatives. 15 representatives of the public transport services of Lombardy, Trentino, Alto Adige, Piedmont, Liguria, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Abruzzo, Sicily and Sardinia attended the meeting.
One-to-one meetings
In addition to the open door meetings, we have launched a stakeholder engagement initiative that gathered insights of strategic intelligence for the implementation of the initiatives promoted by the Partners.
